Consolidate Your Defaulted FFEL Loans for Free

Calculate Your Federal Student Loan Repayment Options with Loan Simulator

From StudentAid.gov

If you have defaulted on your FFEL student loans, you can consolidate them for free through the U.S. Department of Education. Consolidating your loans can help simplify your payments by combining them into one new loan, potentially lowering your monthly payment. When you consolidate, you’ll select an income-based repayment plan. If you have little or no taxable income, your monthly payment could be as low as $0. You can use the Loan Simulator to explore your repayment options and see how much your payments will be.

Step 1: Consolidate Online or Complete a Paper Application

You can consolidate your loans online at https://studentaid.gov or complete a paper application. Call ACSI at 1-866-376-7835 for assistance with the paper application. It can be confusing at times, and our experts are here to help you. We can complete this application on your behalf for free
and send it back to you for review and final signature to start the consolidation process.

You can also download both the necessary forms here:

Direct Consolidation Loan Application:

Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Application:

Currently, defaulted FFEL loans must be consolidated by completing both the Direct Consolidation Loan application and the IDR application. These loans must be placed into an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan initially. After consolidation, you can speak with your loan servicer about possibly changing your repayment plan if desired.
